Stephanus Shute

Stephanus was born in Modbury on  7 November 1879, the youngest of 12 children ( 5 sons) of Samuel and Elizabeth Shute of Brownston village.

He was a son of Samuel and Elizabeth Shute and lived in Loddiswell and he attended Modbury School in 1892.  He married Lily Maud, 1 Lyn Cliff Cottage, Watersmeet Rd, Lynmouth and had 2 sons and a daughter. Resident in Loddiswell in 1911, he was working as a carpenter.

He is mentioned in the Kingsbridge Gazette following a charge of stealing a chicken from Coombe farm, Loddiswell valued at 2/6d (12p). He was sentenced to 1 month in prison with hard labour.

Enlisting in Exeter, Stephanus initially joined the Royal Marines in August 1915 but when he was killed by a shell in France he was listed as serving in the Army as a Corporal in the 134 AT Company, Royal Engineers.

He was killed on 1st August 1916, aged 37, and is buried in the Dartmoor Cemetry, Becordel-Becourt, Somme. His name is also listed on the Loddiswell War Memorial.
